Fernando Alvear

I am passionate about philosophy and its role in our intellectual lives. I recently completed my PhD at the University of Missouri (Columbia, MO), where I taught and research on many areas, but mostly epistemology and moral psychology. Before that, I obtained a BA and a MA in Philosophy from Universidad Alberto Hurtado (Santiago, Chile).

My current research focuses on two areas: virtue epistemology and moral psychology. More details on my research can be found here.

I have taught several philosophy courses at the undergraduate level, including Logic and Critical Thinking, Ethics, Biomedical Ethics, The Meaning of Life, Philosophy of Religion, among others. My primary goal in teaching is to present philosophy as a discipline that helps students develop their intellectual character virtuously. I am particularly interested in showing how philosophical thinking can help make sense of the diverse challenges that arise in students’ academic, personal, and work-related environments. More details on my teaching can be found here.
